Blacklining QuarkXPress is an XTensions module that retains a complete audit trail of all changes made to the text of a QuarkXPress document. This process of recording all insertion and deletions, known as blacklining, was a feature of some of the old, dedicated typesetting systems used in financial printing. Blacklining QuarkXPress now uniquely adds this facility to the QuarkXPress desktop system.

The original version of Blacklining has been available since 1995 and was widely adopted by major companies involved in preparing documents such as report and accounts, share issues, bond and debt issues, statutory reporting to government agencies that required EDGAR format, and stock exchanges from many countries. For certain types of documents, maintaining an audit trail of changes is a mandatory requirement of regulatory bodies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, London Stock Exchange, and Financial Services Authority in the UK. The original version of Blacklining was also adopted for use in non-financial areas such as the legal profession.

Blacklining QuarkXPress v3 adds new features, which increases its value in a wide range of non-financial sectors such as legal documents, disclaimers, terms and conditions, and government reporting. Many non-financial industries are also now stringently regulated so Blacklining QuarkXPress might well be used for documents relating to pharmaceuticals, health and safety, food labeling, and so on. In these specialty (and often fiercely competitive) markets, the ability to offer the security of blacklining can help when pitching for business. Using Blacklining QuarkXPress, amendments can be clearly indicated and the revised draft circulated as a PDF for the next round of consultation.

• manual blacklining marking and clearing;

• compatibility with QuarkXPress 4.X, 5.X, and 6.X;

• compatibility with Mac OS X;

• compatibility with Microsoft Windows;

• compatibility for Acrobat Distiller PDF drivers;

• improved screen drawing and reduced redraw time;

• optionally show the blacklining level(s) in the same line as the document name;

• generate and print a checksum on the same line as the document name when printing with registration marks (checksum is a unique number generated for the page, and if the items on the page differ from one print session to the next then the number will be different);

• export all text from a document;

• remove blacklining function removes all blacklining marks at all levels or allows a user to decide which levels to remove; and

• enhanced blacklining user information report.
