Smart Sharpen is a sophisticated sharpening Plug-in that works where sharpening is needed most, on the edges, while leaving the featureless areas intact. This ensures that noise and sharpening artifacts are not introduced into the image unnecessarily. The Plug-in works both with 8- and 16-bit RGB images and is designed for the Windows version of Photoshop 6.0 and higher, and Photoshop Elements.In general, sharpening works by increasing the local contrast between adjacent pixels. That has the side effect of amplifying the subtle noise that is present in every digital image — be it an image scanned from the negative or taken with the digital camera — especially when higher ISO film/setting is used. Smart Sharpen is a tool that enables the user to circumvent that problem. It analyzes the image and separates the areas that need sharpening from the areas that do not and creates the appropriate mask.
